AI Career Services Platform

The Problem TalentForge helps bootcamp grads and junior tech professionals navigate the job search with more structure, support, and momentum. When I joined, users were dropping off after sign-up and unsure how to engage with the product. The onboarding was slow and manual. The dashboard lacked clarity. And the product didn’t give users any real sense of progress. I set out to simplify how users get started and give them strong motivational cues to keep going. We saw: ⛔️ High onboarding drop-off due to long manual forms 🌀 A dashboard that felt more like a dead-end than a launchpad 😶 Users unsure what to do next 📉 Low return visits and stalled user momentum In short: new users needed a smoother entry point and a clearer reason to come back.

The Solution

I redesigned the entire early user journey—from account creation to the first week of job search activity—around two goals:

  1. Make setup effortless

  2. Motivate action with gamified feedback

Onboarding
  • LinkedIn Connect – Imported user info (experience, skills, location) with one click

  • Resume Upload – Parsed uploaded resumes to auto-fill profiles

  • Goal Selection – Let users define their target role to personalize the experience

  • Progress UI – Made onboarding feel like progress, not paperwork

Dashboard
  • Career Points System – Users earned points for completing real-world job search tasks (e.g. applying to a job, doing a mock interview, writing a cold outreach message)

  • Weekly Challenges – Encouraged consistent progress through fun, achievable tasks

  • Guided Layout – Surfaced top next steps, mentor check-ins, and recent activity

  • Progress Ring – Visual tracker showing how far they’ve come each week

Together, these changes created a clear and rewarding experience, right from Day 1.

Outcomes

  • Onboarding completion time dropped by 60%

  • 🧩 85% of users auto-filled their profile via LinkedIn or resume

  • 🎯 3x increase in weekly task completion after Career Points launch

  • 📈 +40% boost in weekly active users

  • 💬 Users described the product as "motivating," "clear," and "fun to check daily"

My Design Process

  • User Research
Interviewed bootcamp grads to understand what frustrated and motivated them.

  • Experience Mapping
Identified friction points across onboarding and early-stage job hunting.

  • Prototyping & Testing
Designed desktop/mobile flows, tested with async walkthroughs, iterated weekly.

  • Gamification Layer Design
Created a scalable points system and defined reward mechanics.

  • Implementation Support
Delivered final UI and behavior specs with support videos and handoff documentation.

Final Design

The final onboarding and dashboard designs focused on clarity, momentum, and flexibility:

  • Step-by-step onboarding with LinkedIn/resume import, goal selection, and confirmation—designed to be completed in under 2 minutes.

  • Gamified dashboard with Career Points, a weekly progress ring, and a single “Next Best Step” to guide users.

  • Modular challenge cards that allowed users to complete job-related tasks at their own pace, while still building streaks.

  • Responsive UI built with a scalable component system to support future expansion (e.g. mobile, role-specific flows, or cohort-based features).

These flows gave users a clearer sense of control over their job search—while gently nudging them forward.

Impact

📈 +40% increase in weekly active users
⚡ 60% faster onboarding completion time
🎯 3x more job search actions completed per week (e.g. applications, mock interviews, outreach)
🧠 85% of users had pre-filled profiles using LinkedIn or resume
💬 Consistently positive user feedback around clarity, simplicity, and motivation

Bootcamps using TalentForge also noted better engagement and accountability among their alumni cohorts.

Next Steps

If I had continued working on TalentForge, here’s what I would’ve explored next:

  • Role-specific onboarding – Let users choose a path (engineering, design, data) to get customized resources and guidance

  • Progressive rewards – Unlockable achievements or badges based on Career Points milestones

  • Bootcamp cohort leaderboards – Friendly competition and visibility across alumni groups

  • Mobile-first experience – Quick daily check-ins or actions to keep users moving, even on busy days

  • Smart job feed – Personalized job recs based on imported LinkedIn/resume data + challenge performance

These would further personalize the experience and turn TalentForge into a daily job search companion.
